Illocutionary Acts in Final Destination 5 Movie

Abstract

Illocutionary act is one of three basic concepts of speech act. Illocutionary act is a type of speech act that has a purpose behind the utterance. The utterance is not only basic information, it also contained statements, commands, commitments, expressions, and declare something. This article aims to analyze the types and the meaning of illocutionary act used in Final Destination 5 movie. The writer interested in analyzing Final Destination 5 movie since the movie has a good review and provided the data. The data were collected by observation method. The collected data were analyzed by qualitative method using theory proposed by Searle (1979) to identify the types of illocutionary act. Seven Types of Meaning theory by Leech (1981) to find the meaning of illocutionary act and supported by Context of Situation theory by Halliday and Hassan (1985). The finding shows that there are five types of illocutionary acts that found in Final Destination 5 movie, there are 23,07% assertives, 30,07% directives, 15,3% commissives, 26,9% expressives, and 3,84% declarations.
