Code-Mixing and Code-Switching Used by the Main Character in “Emily in Paris”
Abstract
This study delves into the analysis of code-mixing and code-switching used by the main character in the “Emily in Paris” series. This study aims to identify the types of code-mixing and code-switching as used by the main character in the “Emily in Paris” series and determine the most frequently used type of code-mixing and code-switching by using mathematically based methods. The data is collected through a documentation technique, involving a thorough watching of the series with the guidance of the movie script to identify instances of code-mixing and code-switching precisely. The study adopts both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative analysis aligns with the theoretical framework proposed by Muysken (2000) and Poplack (1980), categorizing code-switching into intrasentential, intersentential, and extrasentential, and code-mixing into insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the insertion type of code-mixing is the most frequently used by Emily in “Emily in Paris.” In addition, it was found that the intrasentential type of code-switching is the most frequently used by Emily.
