THE LEVEL OF MOTIVATION OF FARMERS IN INTENSIVE PIG BREEDING (Case Study in Sipinggan Lumbansiantar Village Nainggolan District Samosir Regency North Sumatra Province)

Abstract

 This research aims to determine the level of motivation of farmers in raising pigs intensively and the related factors. The research was carried out in Sipinggan Lumbansiantar Village. Location selection was done using purposive sampling. Respondents were determined using the staratified random sampling method as many as 36 people. Analysis uses descriptive qualitative and Spearman's Level Correlation Coefficient test. The research results show that the level of motivation of farmers in intensive pig farming is in the medium category. Factors: Factors: socio-cultural and financial impacts, knowledge, number of family dependents, intensity of communication, non-formal education, farming experience, participation in livestock groups, position in social organizations, number of livestock ownership, attitudes, skills, land tenure have a very real relationship (P<0.01), age has a significant relationship (P<0.10) the formal education factor has no significant relationship (P>0.10) with the farmer's motivation level. Conclusions: 1) The farmer's motivation level in intensive pig farming is moderate; 2) Related factors are socio-cultural and financial impacts, knowledge, number of family dependents, intensity of communication, non-formal education, farming experience, participation in livestock groups, position in social organizations, number of livestock ownership, attitudes, skills, land tenure, and age. Suggestion: Farmers are expected to be more active in raising pigs intensively to increase productivity to become the farmer's main income. The government has formed livestock groups and provided extension workers for outreach so as to increase farmers' motivation to raise pigs intensively.
