Abstrak

Therapeutic communication by nurses in the medical tourism destination is a must-have competency. The existence of patients who come from diverse cultural backgrounds makes this therapeutic communication influenced by nurses’ cultural competence. This research aims to determine the relationship between cultural competence and therapeutic communication in nurses at Bali Mandara Hospital. This research was conducted from January to June 2024. The research design used was descriptive correlation. The sample size was 62 nurses obtained through proportionate stratified random sampling technique. Cultural competence and therapeutic communication were measured using a questionnaire. The results of this research found that the majority of nurses are female, with an associate degree in nursing, the majority are Hindu, Balinese, speak Balinese, Indonesian, and English, have cared for patients from diverse cultures almost every day, and have moderately good cultural competence and therapeutic communication. The average age of the nurses was 30,71 years and the length of service was 7,82 years. The median of hours of training/seminars on culturally competent care was 2 hours. The statistical test used was Pearson Product Moment. The results showed that there was a strong and positive significant relationship between cultural competence and nurses' therapeutic communication (p-value = 0,000; r = 0,592; ? = 0,05). The positive relationship means that the more cultural competence nurses have, the more effective their therapeutic communication skills will be, and vice versa. Nurses who understand the patient's culture can provide more optimal care and be able to avoid communication misunderstandings with patients and their families.
