THE EFFECT OF GIBERRELLIN TREATMENT ON SORGHUM (Sorghum sudanense) SEED GERMINATION
Abstrak
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of giberelin soaking with different concentration on
Sorghum sudanense seed germination. The study also investigated concentration level of giberelin that
would improve seed germination. This experimental study carried out for a month and used completely
randomized design with four concentration level of giberellin (T0: without gibberellin; T1: 0.01 ppm; T2:
0.1 ppm and T3: 1 ppm) as treatments. Every treatment had four replications. All seeds were immersed
in giberelin solution for 48 hours. The result showed germination of sorghum seeds tend to increase with
giberellin treatments. This indicated by gemination percentage, value, and peak germination were higher
in the 1 ppm gibberellin than other treatments. However, statistically there was no significant different on
germination rate between with and without giberelin treatments. In conclusion, gibberellin treatment could
increase sudan’s seed germination but the level of gibberellin concentration in this study was too low to
improve sudan’s seed germination significantly.
Key words: germination, giberelin, seeds, Sorghum sudanense
